Back to Back Blast Off Championships for VUSA Timbers G98 U12 Azul (formerly United White 98)
With 11 returning players from last year’s U11 team, VUSA Timbers G98 Azul took 1st Place (U12 D Bracket) at the Federal Way Blast Off Tournament July 30-Aug 1st for the second year in a row. The girls began the tournament with a 3-0 win against the Timber Barons ’98 on Friday evening after an unexpected I-5 multiple car crash caused the game to be re-scheduled to a later time. On Saturday, the girls earned their second win against the Tsunami FC 2-0 who they later faced in the Championship game. In their 3rd game against MRFC Tenacity, the girls won 4-2 putting them into 1st place going into Sunday’s Championship game.
The girls faced the Tsunami FC again in Sunday’s Championship game at Celebration Park. After a nail-biting first half with no score for either team, the girls put the winning goal in the net with only about 10 minutes left in the game. They were able to hold off the Tsunami for the 1-0 win.

On May 14, 2009 Governor Christine Gregoire signed House Bill 1824 – also known as the Zackery Lystedt Law – which will directly affect youth sports and head injury policies. The law became effective on July 26, 2009. Washington Youth Soccer has launched a concussion education section on its website. Here you will be able to find resources that explain the law in detail, describe the signs and symptoms of concussion, and outline the steps clubs, associations, coaches, parents and athletes need to take to ensure they are in compliance with the law. The posted resources will provide clear, concise information that will help administrators, coaches, parents and athletes understand the risks of concussion and the safety benefits the new procedures will bring.
Under the new concussion education section on the Washington Youth Soccer website, you will be able to find:
- Head Injury Guidelines and Procedures
- Full text of the Zackery Lystedt Law
- Coach’s Guide / Fact Sheet (English and Spanish)
- Parent’s Fact Sheet (English and Spanish)
- Athletes Fact Sheet (English and Spanish)
- Informed Consent Sheet (mandatory for all Washington Youth Soccer players and parent(s)/guardian(s) to review)
- School District Statement of Compliance
- Links to educational videos
Since the law has passed, all Washington Youth Soccer Clubs and Associations must follow all steps outlined on www.wsysa.com to ensure they are compliant with the law. The two requirements that directly affect registration processes include:
- Annually require all players and the parent(s)/guardian(s) of those players to sign and return an informed consent form relating to the nature and risk of concussion or head injury. This information sheet shall include the signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury and can be found at www.wsysa.com.
- Ensuring that all coaches (paid or volunteer) are educated in the nature and risk of concussion or head injury prior to the first practice/competition. This education shall include signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury. Resources for this education are available at www.wsysa.com in both English and Spanish.

Vancouver United BU-12 Impact 96 - President's Cup
The Boys U12 Impact 96 team ended their season on a high note making it all the way to the Semifinals of the Washington State Youth Soccer Associations President's Cup in Burlington, Washington.
The Impact were perfect in the District 5 qualifiers going 3-0 in pool play and winning the D5 championships 1-0 against a very good Camas team.
At the state level the Impact once again did very well going 2-1 in pool play qualifying for the semi-finals. The semi-final game was only 2 hours after the last pool game. The Impact fought hard in the semi's but ended up losing to the team that eventually went on to win the state championship.
Thanks! Ron Witherup - Coach

Vancouver United BU-18 Storm - District Playoff & President's Cup report
Vancouver United Storm played this season in the BU-19 Open Division. They finished first in the first half of the season, in second place in the 2nd half, and first overall for the season. This was especially gratifying in that several new players forced the team to play up a year due to their ages, and several team members were actually playing up two years. The season was made even more difficult in that many of the players couldn't make team practices or games due to school sports such as Football, Golf, and Cross Country Track. But the team hung together, and continually improved all season long.
The BU-18 President's Cup Qualifier matches were played the weekend of 11/22 & 11/23. In our first game, Vancouver United Storm was pitted against the Battleground Jets. Playing on a somewhat muddy field, with fog and cold temperatures in the upper 30's, the team struggled to hit their stride and find the mark. Great shots were taken by Tyler Blain, Raul Esquivel, and Francisco Munoz but were just off the mark and failed to find the net in the first half. About 10 minutes into the second half, the Storm finally broke through on a slashing breakaway culminating with a corner shot by RJ Walkins finding the net for our first goal. The boys continued to attack the goal, meanwhile extremely strong defense by Tyler Blain, Cameron Hall, Cameron McCallum, Xisen Tian, and Anthony Edwards continually turned back the Jets from getting any shots. Unfortunately the Storm couldn't capitalize on the offensive end, and with 5 minutes left in the game, a slip and fall by a defender and a mis-cue on the Storm's part led to a lone goal squeaking by Kaleb Johnson, our keeper's outstretched hand on a dive into the corner to tie the game up. That's where the game ended 5 minutes later, with Battleground bunkering down and turning away every shot or penetration into the final third of the field.
In the second match. Storm was pitted against another Vancouver United team, the Regulators. Determined to avoid another loss or tie, the team played aggressively and in a much more controlled manner. Strategic passes and through balls to the strikers resulted in 2 goals by RJ Walkins, and a rocket shot from the Center Midfielder Austin Riley into the upper right corner for a 3rd goal in the first half. Two additional shots by RJ Walkins and another by Kaleb Johnson were barely turned away by desperate efforts from the Regulator's keeper. Outstanding defense from the Storm's keeper Jason Buchanan, as well as defenders Cameron Hall, Josue Garcia, Cameron McCallum, Armando Garcia, and Xisen Tian limited the Regulators to just 4 shots in the first half, and 2 in the second half. A lone goal was scored by the Regulators in the 2nd half of the game when their right forward managed to curl a shot around the defender into the upper right corner of the net. It was a beautiful shot that just managed to sneak in under the bar and over the keeper's fingertips. That goal was promptly avenged a minute later when a cross from Danny Moreno in the right corner found Anthony Edwards on the left side, who chested it down to his feet and knocked it in. Very strong play from the midfielders Josue Garcia, Danny Moreno, Tyler Blain, Austin Blain, Francisco Munoz, and David Abbott helped prevent any more penetration, and continued to put pressure on the Regulators with through balls, chips, and lobs into the box for the forwards. This game ended in a 4-1 victory for the Storm.
Our 3rd match was on Sunday. Storm went into this match against the Camas-Washougal Goal Strikers needing a win to secure advancement into the final round of qualifying. The team was energized and on fire, and struck immediately and often. The teamwork and passes were spot on, and the shots were on target. By the end of the first half the score was 6-0 in our favor, with two each for forwards RJ Walkins and Raul Esquivel (including one header from a corner kick), and one each from mid-fielders Austin Riley and Danny Moreno. The Goal Strikers almost managed to score in the first half when a corner kick was blocked by keeper Jason Buchanan, but the rebound and subsequent shot to the opposite corner was blocked by Raul Esquivel with a brilliant bicycle kick in the goal to clear it. In the 2nd half, the team continued its strong play with 3 more goals from Kaleb Johnson, Danny Moreno, and Austin Riley. Meanwhile, stellar defense by Armando Garcia, David Abbott, Cameron McCallum, Xisen Tian, Raul Esquivel, and Cameron Hall smothered the Goal Strikers, only allowing two shots on goal the whole game. Of special note was Austin Blain on Left Forward, playing 2 years up in age going head to head against bigger and stronger opponents, and ripping two left-footed crosses from the corner across the goal to our strikers coming in for narrow misses. Really well done! Despite 3 of our goals being called offsides late (everyone had already lined back up at midfield for the kickoff), Storm kept their cool and advanced to the final match with a 9-0 shutout.
The final match 2 hours later turned out to be a rematch against the BG Jets, who advanced on points after a previous tie with the VUSA Regulators. We were determined to up-level our play this game, and it really showed. Storm came out strong and aggressive, and stayed that way throughout the game. We rained 15 shots at goal in the first half versus the Jets getting two shots, but the Jet's keeper managed to turn back four on target. The other shots we blew wide or over the top, including one that may still be rolling into the next county. In the 2nd half it was more of the same, with 10 shots and a header failing to find the mark. The Jets got off one shot from outside the box that was easily blocked, but then almost won the game on a easy shot to the keeper where he was jostled as he caught it. The ball was knocked loose and began rolling behind him into the goal. It would've been the game winner but for a heroic diving save by Francisco Munoz to block the rolling ball, and get it cleared to the side. The two five-minute overtime periods also went scoreless, with the Storm failing to convert a single one of their 10 shots on goal. Too much adrenaline and stress as they once again blew easy scoring opportunities including a wide open header over the top of the goal. Meanwhile, the defense refused to yield an inch turning back everything that came their way. So it all came down to a shootout - kicks from the mark to decide the game.
First up for Storm was Tyler Blain, who calmly walked up and put one in the corner for our first score. Our keeper for this game was Kaleb Johnson, who smothered a hard shot up the middle for the Jets first kick. Next up for the Storm was Cameron Hall, who promptly bounced his shot into the bottom of the upper left bar and in for our second goal. Kaleb once again turned back another shot from the Jets to make the score 2-0. Our 3rd player was Francisco Munoz, who slightly topped the ball on his kick and missed just to the left of the goal. The 3rd Jets player stepped up, and just managed to slide his shot to the right of Kaleb's diving attempt to block it and into the net to make the score 2-1. Next up for Storm was Danny Moreno, who quickly knocked the ball into the left side of the net for another score. With the score now 3-1 in our favor, the pressure was really on the Jets. Their 4th player stepped up for his kick, absolutely needing to score to stay in the game. Our keeper Kaleb was equal to the moment though, and made a brilliant block on the kick to win the game for the Storm. A simply awesome job by the whole team, and a refusal to lose despite the many missed opportunities during the game now means that Vancouver United Storm advances to the state semi-final rounds in Burlington, Wa., on December 6th and 7th.
The roster for the Storm includes: David Abbott, Austin Blain, Tyler Blain, Jason Buchanan, Anthony Edwards, Raul Esquivel, Josue Garcia, Armando Garcia, Cameron Hall, Kaleb Johnson, Cameron McCallum, Danny Moreno, Francisco Munoz, Austin Riley, Xisen Tian, and RJ Walkins.
Congratulations to the Storm, and good luck at the state cup!!
Coach Ric Hall Coach Victor Weekes Team Manager Andrea Hall *********** Presidents Cup Played in Burlington, Wa, December 6-7 this year, it was an awesome sight to see as the large complex was filled with teams, parents, and spectators. Whether it was nerves or still the seeming curse of being unable to find the back of the net that plagued our final games in the regular season and district playoff, our first game against the eventual state champs started out slow. Our shots were wide or high, bounced off the crossbar, or blocked by heroic efforts on the other team as apparent goals were deflected at the last moment by diving defenders or sliding keepers, and twice I swear it seemed like the goal posts moved to block the shots. Such was our luck in this game, and while we did finally score a breakthrough goal late in the 2nd half, we never could get in a groove and ending up losing 4-1.
Our second game (and last chance to move on) came on Sunday. The field was extremely soft and sloppy, and while we matched the other team shot for shot and opportunity for opportunity, again we failed to find the back of the net. Some key injuries from the previous game didn't help either, as we once again came up short. Though the final score was 7-1, it truly didn't reflect the game intensity or the matchup between the two teams. Most of the 2nd half the Storm was on offense, but we couldn't convert the opportunities. Meanwhile a keeper injury and the extremely muddy field meant that shots that would normally be blocked easily were slipping through. I was extremely proud of the team though. We went into the game knowing that we either had to hold the other team scoreless or had to win by a score of 3-1 in order to advance to the finals on points. When our opponent scored their second goal, our guys never gave up and fought to the very end. It was a great effort, and we still finished 3rd in the state!
Congrats to the Storm on a great season! Let's get them next year!

Vancouver United Avalanche 92's (Boys)
The BU16 Avalanche won the Commissioner's Cup in March of this year. These State Champions returned 14 of those 17 players and added a former Premier player to form another strong team for the 2008-2009 Season. The Avalanche played in 3 Summer Tournaments to prepare for the Fall Season. Playing up in the BU16-17 division in the always competitive PCU Classic proved a worthy first test. Against a variety of Premier competition, the Avalanche won one, tied two and lost two games to finish 5th. Playing against an all Select team field in the Crossfire Challenge outside Seattle, the boys played well and won all 3 of its Preliminary Bracket games. By winning our Bracket, we earned a spot in the Finals against the host team Crossfire-Mercado team. The Avalanche remembered this team as our toughest game in last year's Commissioner's Cup, squeaking out a double-overtime 1-0 victory in the Quarter-Finals. The boys played excellent defense and dominated play in the second half. We scored a goal mid-way through the 2nd half to secure our 1-0 victory, and win The Crossfire Challenge! Our last Summer Tournament was VUSA's own Summer Slam held August 8-10th. By now, our boys were playing at a high level. We beat the BU16 CPSC B team and a tough SCSC Elite team to reach the Finals. We met the BU15 CPSC team in the Finals at Harmony on Sunday, and handily beat them 7-0 to win The Slam! The BU16 Avalanche is looking forward to defending its District 5 League Title this Fall. Repeating will be difficult now that we are part of the Boys' High School division. Our 15 year olds will be playing against 16-18 year olds in League play, but are looking forward to the challenge.

VUSA Vancouver United '92 Blue (Girls)
The VUSA, Vancouver United '92 Blue girls soccer team played two tournaments over the past two weekends and placed 1st in each. The first tournament was the Federal Way Blastoff, held in Federal Way, Washington between 8/1/08 to 8/3/08. The team made it to the championship game by beating the Newport Adrenaline the night before. The girls were one player down, down 0-1, and came back to score two goals in the final ten minutes of the game to advance. The team then won the championship game when Katie Holloway touched in the winning goal with 37 seconds to play in regulation. The second tournament was the VUSA Summer Slam that was held in Vancouver, Washington from 8/8/08 to 8/10/08 at the Harmony Sports Complex. The girls went 3-0-1 and won the championship game 3-1. This team is a U16 team and was playing in the (Summer Slam) Girls High School bracket against players one to two years older. Both tournaments were won by the sheer determination of these girls working as a team. No one individual effort could have done it alone. It should also be mentioned that the girls finished 2nd at the PCU tournament this year.

Vancouver United '95 Boys
The Vancouver United 95 Boys U13 team finished second this weekend at the Tumwater Kick in the Grass Tournament. The 95s met the Longview Timber Barons for the finals at East Olympia Middle School in Tumwater. The 95s controlled the entire game out shooting the Longview Timber Barons 5-1. The 95s utilized the offside trap to nullify the Timber Baron offense. But the Timber Barons managed two breakaway goals, one in the first half and one in the second giving them a two to one lead with ten minutes to play. Protecting their lead, the Timber Barons assumed a defensive posture until Sala Moreno scored on a sliding kick in the far corner of the Timber Barons goal. The goal rallied the 95s who began a furious attack in the final minutes who managed three more shots on goal but none found their mark. The United 95s are looking forward to a regular season rematch with the Timber Barons!

A great true story that's all in good fun and fundraising: (posted 6/27/2008)
Clint Warta's Vancouver United GU-11 White Team challenged Doug Wolvert's Columbia Timbers GU-11B Team to a fundraising contest. They wanted to see which team could sell the most butter braids (a frozen pastry). The coach of the winning team agreed to wear a dress for a scrimmage between the two teams to be held Wednesday, June 25th. However, if the two teams combined could sell more than 200 butter braids (which also waives shipping costs), then BOTH coaches agreed to wear a dress for the scrimmage. Congratulations to Vancouver United for selling over 300 butter braids! Both coaches ended up wearing dresses, scarves, and hats while coaching the scrimmage! It was quite the sight to see! Everyone had lots of fun, and the proceeds will buy the girls raincoats and equipment. Everyone's a winner!
